Petrol in a diesel is the most common wrong fuel call we get in Adelaide. Petrol nozzles are narrower than diesel nozzles, so a petrol pump slots straight into a diesel filler. The diesel nozzle is wider, so the opposite mistake rarely happens.
What you might notice
Most drivers realise at the pump when they spot the green handle or read the display. If you have not started the engine, this is the best time to call.
If the engine has been started, you may notice a rough idle, a loud knocking or rattling sound from the engine, and pale smoke from the exhaust. Petrol lowers the cetane rating of diesel. Low cetane delays ignition, letting unburnt fuel build up in the cylinder before it all ignites at once with a violent bang. That late combustion is the knock you hear.
What we do when we arrive
We arrive on the job with the right equipment. We drain the fuel tank, flush the lines, and get you back on the road. Most jobs take between thirty minutes and an hour, depending on the job. The contaminated fuel is taken away and disposed of legally.
What it costs
We quote every job in full over the phone before we move. The price depends on your vehicle, where you are stranded, how much fuel went in, and whether the engine ran. A larger tank, a spot outside metro Adelaide, or a full tank of petrol takes more time and fresh fuel to clear out. What never changes is the quote. The number we give you on the phone is the exact number you pay on the kerb, with zero surprise fees on arrival. Everything else lives on our pricing page.
Why not to start the engine
Modern common rail diesels rely on diesel to lubricate the high pressure fuel pump. Petrol acts as a solvent and strips that lubrication. Leaving the key alone stops a manageable roadside job from turning into an expensive workshop bill for pump and injector repairs. The full maths is on what a drive-on job actually costs.
The vehicles it happens to most
The diesels we see most are the ones Adelaide drives most. HiLux, Ranger, Prado, D-Max, and older Patrols. They are the utes people drive every day, and the pump handle mix up usually happens after hundreds of fills where they never had to think about it.
What to do right now
- Leave the key off. If the engine is running, turn it off.
- Push the vehicle to a safe spot if it is safe to do so.
- Call us on (08) 7083 9699 for an upfront quote.
- Wait with the car. Towing to a workshop often adds unnecessary towing fees and workshop downtime.
