The first question on nearly every wrong fuel call is the same. What is this going to cost me? Fair question, so here is the honest answer, the same way we explain it at the bowser.
The drain, quoted before we move
A standard wrong fuel job on a passenger car or ute is quoted exactly on the phone before we leave. That covers the callout, draining the tank, flushing the lines, EPA compliant disposal of the old fuel and enough fresh fuel to get you moving. No card surcharge, no after hours loading, no fix no fee. The full breakdown lives on our pricing page.
The repair bill, and why nobody can quote it upfront
Now the other column. A modern common rail diesel uses the fuel itself to lubricate its high pressure pump. Petrol strips that lubrication away, so every minute the engine runs on it, metal is wearing on metal. Once a pump starts shedding metal it sends debris through the whole fuel system, and the workshop fix for that is a new pump, new injectors and a full system clean.
On a late model HiLux, Ranger or Euro diesel that is a costly repair, and what it lands at depends entirely on the vehicle and what got damaged. One car might be a couple of thousand. Another might be far more. Nobody can tell you the number until a workshop has looked at it. Even a lighter case, a pump on its own, is not a small bill. Add a tow, a few days off the road and a hire car, and the gap between draining it early and driving on it gets very wide, very fast.
Why the timing is everything
Here is the part that saves people money every week. The wrong fuel sitting in your tank does no damage at all. The damage starts when the engine runs and pulls that fuel through the system. Catch it at the pump, don't turn the key, and the drain is almost always the whole story. Drive on it and the bill starts climbing with every kilometre. If you are not sure whether you have misfuelled, the signs are here.
Won't insurance cover it?
Often not. Most standard comprehensive policies treat misfuelling as driver error, and even when a policy does cover it, the excess is usually about the same as the drain anyway. We wrote up the honest version on our insurance page. Short version, sort the car first, argue the paperwork later.
The cheap version of this story
Wrong fuel in, hands off the key, call (08) 7083 9699. We come to you anywhere in Adelaide, 24/7, drain it, flush it, refuel it and you drive away. That is the whole difference between an afternoon sorted on the kerb and a repair bill you did not need.
