We get a lot of airport calls and they have all got the same flavour. Someone has landed after a long flight, grabbed a rental they have never driven and pulled into the servo on Sir Donald Bradman Drive to fill up before dropping it back. The dash does not say petrol or diesel, the cap does not always either and half these fleets are diesel HiLuxes, Rangers, RAV4 diesels and Euro wagons that look exactly like the petrol ones. Wrong pump and they only realise when they see the receipt.
Best thing you can do is not start it. Call us before you turn the key and we will come to you, drain it, flush it and refuel so the car is right before you hand it back. Rental return, pickup lane, the airport servo, a hotel car park, wherever it is. We deal with the mess and the disposal, you make your flight.
If you have already driven it off the airport before the penny dropped, still fixable on the spot, just takes a bit longer. The reason we push so hard on not starting it, a diesel's high pressure pump needs the fuel to lubricate it and petrol does not lubricate anything, so every minute it runs on the wrong fuel is wear you do not want. Most cars come good after a proper drain and flush, but sooner is always better.
One tip if you are ever unsure at the pump, check the inside of the filler flap or the handbook before you lift the nozzle, it will tell you petrol or diesel. And if you have already done it, do not stress about the rental company, just call (08) 7083 9699 and we will sort the car before it ever gets back to the depot.
