A customer rang about a 1971 Chrysler Valiant Regal that had been sitting in a shed at Woodville West for about ten years. It was heading to a workshop to be brought back to the road, and before it went anywhere the customer wanted the fuel tank inspected and cleaned out.
Some issues need modern day solutions. A classic car sorted with modern day equipment.
We talked it through first. Old fuel is its own kind of contamination. Petrol breaks down as it stands, drops out gum and varnish, and draws in moisture, and none of that belongs in a fuel system that is about to be woken up. The car was not going to be started, so the job was a straight one: get the old fuel out of the tank.
The battery was disconnected, so the engine could not be turned over, and the customer did not want it started anyway. That suited the job. We ran our usual tank clean, checking and photographing as we went. Roughly eighteen litres came out, collected properly and taken away with us. Clean and dry, so the workshop starts with a known quantity.

Two litres of AdBlue in the diesel tank of a Ford Transit at Parafield Gardens. Never started, but the ignition had been turned on, so we treated it as contaminated past the tank. Drained and flushed on the kerb.
A diesel Ford Everest misfuelled with 75 litres of petrol at a Murray Bridge servo, never started. We met the customer at home, drained it and had it back on the road for the weekend.
