Two litres of AdBlue went into the diesel tank of a Ford Transit van at Parafield Gardens, on a tank that was already full. The customer did not start the engine. The customer did turn the key to ignition, and that one detail changed how we treated the job.
AdBlue is the one you never turn the key on. Priming the pump is enough to pull it out of the tank and into the lines.
Switching the ignition on runs the fuel pump for a few seconds to prime the system, and the engine never has to turn over for that to happen. AdBlue is heavier than diesel, so it sits at the bottom of the tank, which is exactly where the pickup is. That is enough to move it out of the tank and into the lines. So we treated the van as contaminated past the tank instead of assuming the AdBlue had stayed put.
Ignition stayed off from the moment we arrived. Sixty five litres of diesel and AdBlue came out, the lines were flushed, fresh diesel went in from our own stock, and we took it out for test drives before the keys went back. Running the way it should. Job done on the spot.
